Westwego

Founded in 1870 and named in 1873 by Texas-Pacific Railroad. Developer Pablo Sala subdivided adjacent land along the banks of Company Canal in 1892 to create Salaville, where Cheniere Caminada survivors fled to after the 1893 hurricane. Incorporated as a town in 1919 and as a city in 1951. Westwego's first Mayor was attorney Conrad A. Buchler, 1919-1921.

Westwego is a city Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. It is a suburban community of the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area and lies along the westbank of the Mississippi River. As of 2020, the population of the City of Westwego was 8,568.

Westwego began as a fishing village called Salaville along a canal which connected the Mississippi river to Bayou Segnette. Many survivors of the 1893 hurricane relocated to Westwego after the hurricane destroyed their fishing village of Cheniere Caminada west of Grand Isle.

Westwego boasts picturesque bayous and swamps. Located is next to Bayou Segnette State Park the most popular state park in Louisiana.
